Application Development Strategy

Build or buy, insource, outsource, or offshore

Off-the-shelf software needs to cater for all csutomers, and won't necessarily meet your specific requirements. Developing software in-house gives you more control over particular functionality, but dramatically increases your HR overhead, and ongoing operational expense.

Outsourcing has proven to be a reasonable compromise in many cases. However custom developed software is fraught with potential challenges. Budget & delivery overruns, quality issues, even project failure. Whilst off-shoring development promises even lower cost, the risk of failure increases dramatically.

The best strategy then would seem to be: a dedicated expert team of developers, that work onsite in your business with key stakeholders, deliver working features frequently to allow for course correcting, and don't need extra infrastructure for a development environment.

How the Service Works

Product Owner

The first imperative is to ensure that you, the client, own the full development of the product. As such you nominate a key business decision maker as Product Owner. We can provide training in their particular role and responsibilities, but it is important that they have the decision making authority in the business. They will work closely with the Solution Development Team throughout the project to manage priorities and ensure the application meets the business value.

Solution Development Team

The team can be wholly Readify consultants, or jointly resourced with developers from your organisation. We find that many clients engage our Solution Development Service and assign their developers to the team which allows them to gain experience in Agile development for later internal projects.

Product Backlog

With the Product Owner, and Solution Development Team roles assigned, the team will determine all of the features to develop for the application. These are developed as User Stories, estimated by the team as a whole, and prioritised by the Product Owner in a Product Backlog. It is this backlog that drives activities for the rest of the development.

Development Environment

The Build Master then configures the development environment in our cloud based architecture. This typically takes very little time, and we have processes in place to ensure that configurations are backed up for easy replication.

Development Sprints

The Solution Development Team typically works to 10 day sprints or iterations. They perform daily builds, and deliver working features, from the prioritised backlog at the end of every sprint. This gives our clients confidence that the project is on track, ensures that there is a working application at every milestone, and allows for course corrections should priorities change for any reason.
Sprints aren't constrained to 10 days, they can be as short as 5 days, and some clients extend them to 4 weeks. In our experience a 10 day sprint is long enough to deliver real value, and frequent enough to stay on track without major revision work.

Flexible Options

The Readify Solution Development Service allows clients to fix project scope, with a variable duration; or fix duration with a variable project scope (i.e. features delivered).
