Operators of large physical asset networks are often faced with the challenge of understanding complex dynamic systems with multiple interdependent components. Simulation tools employ dynamic systems modelling to provide useful insights on system behaviour, to help asset managers better understand their control levers, and to help forecast future trends. Applications of simulation include modelling the degradation of long-term electricity assets to forecast future capex requirements for repair and replacement, modelling resource allocation in a hospital with highly variable service demand, and modelling the concentration of drinking water disinfectant in a large and complex water system.
