Team Soak - Winners of Microsoft's Imagine Cup Competition (Australia) 2008
27 May 2008
Congratulations to Team SOAK, the winners of the Australian leg of the Imagine Cup. The Imagine Cup is a competition for students that seeks to find the best technology innovators around the globe in a variety of different areas; Readify sponsored the software development category by offering internships and mentoring support to the top teams and is very pleased to see that Team SOAK has won here in Australia and is now on track to make an impressive showing at the world finals in Paris next month.
Imagine Cup always has a theme to inspire the students, and this year’s theme was all about a sustainable environment. “All four finalists had amazing proposals on how we can better utilise and manage our environment, and it’s fantastic to think we have this calibre of people just now entering the industry,” said Andrew Parsons, Education Evangelist for Readify, “With the obvious concerns around the nation about diminishing water supplies, it was gratifying to see two of the top four teams coming forward with creative and achievable concepts for managing this vital liquid resource.”
Team SOAK’s aim was to improve the experience by farmers in managing their water usage, incorporating multiple technologies including software like Virtual Earth and hardware such as ground, water, temperature and GPS sensors, to create a sophisticated, automatic guidance system to provide water to the areas of their farm that need it, and saving it, quite literally, for a rainy day in others.
Team SOAK has been interviewed by the media already and APC magazine’s editor, Tony Sarno has written up some great coverage on the winning team and how the SOAK system works. Check it out at http://apcmag.com/imagine_cups_surprise_winners_a_boon_for_farmers.htm.
Over the next few weeks, Readify will be working with Team SOAK to provide them advice and mentoring as they prepare for their showing at the world finals in France. Already, the team has made several tweaks to their system based on feedback they received from the judging panel and we’re sure that they’re going to wow the crowds in Paris.
Go Team SOAK!
